Solar PV panels convert only 10-20% of incident energy to electricity. There may be three or four times more thermal energy available above ambient temperatures in the warm air that could be drawn from behind solar panels. The warm air could be used for winter ventilation or year round supply to air source heat pump water heaters. PV powered inflatable ductwork could inflate to seal the array edge to roof and transport ...more »

EQUIPMENT & APPLIANCES CAMPAIGN WINNERS
Congratulations James Rowland, Mark Walter, and Matthew O’Kelly!
James is an engineer at Priority Designs, an industrial design and engineering consulting firm in Columbus, Ohio. His work typically shifts between electrical and mechanical design and testing for various product development programs. He also currently consults for Ohio State University’s Office of Energy and Environment by advising and supporting the research activities associated with the 2011 Ohio State Solar Decathlon entry, enCORE.
The idea is a hybrid air/water conditioner, which exploits synergies between conditioning indoor air, dehumidification, ventilation and hot water heating to significantly reduce energy expenditures associated with all of those processes.
The winners presented their idea in front of 300 technical experts, lab scientists, corporate partners, small businesses, and financial institutions at the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Industry Day, hosted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. You can view a video of their exhibition at here. They will also have the opportunity to explore partnerships with the lab and/or industry partners to advance market adoption of their ideas. James Rowland, Mark Walter, and Matthew O’Kelly are currently in the preliminary stages of a potential cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) with ORNL.
Clothes dryers "waste" an enormous amount of potential space heating. It's time to reclaim it. But the technology needed is more than the simple airflow redirect boxes (such as the DEFLECTO EX12 Heat Saver and Lint Trap) currently on the market. Humidity must be removed from the outgoing airflow by means of a condensing unit, and that moisture must be safely pumped into the waste drain. According to a USA Today report ...more »
Nocturnal radiation cooling, a renewable cooling energy, has been ignored in current building designs but it is documented in ASHRAE Handbook (2011). Night cooling energy can be captured with transpired collectors and can cool air as much as 10 degrees F below ambient from sunset to sunrise. The resulting air cavity also ventilates the roof which Oak Ridge National Laboratory labels as Above Sheathing Ventilation (ASV). ...more »
Since all new homes are now much better insulated and are relatively air-tight, HVAC systems are being challenged in new ways. In particular dynamic simulation of heat and moisture in tight buildings with typical internal moisture generation have shown that split-system AC units currently on the market do not provide sufficient control of humidity. It is also known that ventilation is required for adequate indoor air ...more »
Design a refrigerator with ability to store super-cooled thermal mass to maintain constant refrigerator temperatures during peak pricing periods. Refrigerator should only need to run once a day during off-peak periods. Smart controls must be capable of receiving utility price signals. As more renewable generation sources get added to the grid, off-peak pricing periods will coincide with periods of excess renewable generation ...more »
Clothes dryers don't use that much energy but they do consume tons of energy because of the conditioned air they blow out of a home. The solution is a direct vent clothes dryers. Wouldn't take that much engineering on the dryer and build a new exhaust vent double wall pipe and termination box that sucks in air on bottom and exhausts air out the top with a 90 degree exit flapper. Would save hundreds of millions of dollars ...more »
Catalytic combustor are short lived and expensive to replace. For the last 3 years I have been using 1/2 of a $15 wire flue brush in the place of my factory combustor. As the wire bristles heat up and starts to glow red secondary combustion takes off. Because of the large amount of the surface the bristles provide to support secondary combustion I think my combustor will match or exceed the performance of the expensive ...more »
apartments are usually poorly ventilated and occupants open windows to get some fresh air, causing others to become too cold or too hot and often drawing in stale air from other units or even the garage. Efficient unit-only HRVs would allow better comfort and health at a large energy saving - tightness could then be done without limit.
Utilize the capabilities of one energy saving system to extend or enhance the capability of another. For example, use the thermal solar collectors to cool the overheated geoexchange field at night. Or eliminate costly heat recovery equipment by placing general exhaust fans to discharge onto rooftop condenser coils.
General Description The proposed solar concentrator is a patented small-size, low-concentration, single-axis solar generator which can produce both electrical and thermal power from solar energy. Each production unit is constituted by four parabolic mirrors concentrating solar ray on a linear-focus collector where suitable PV cells are mounted on a specific support which has been designed and built to recover under thermal ...more »
A Vancouver company is making use of wastewater being flushed down drains, recycling energy by transferring heat to incoming water and space heating. Shouldn't this be in all residential complexes?
In climates with extended cold weather, energy is used to run refrigerators and freezers to cool food down to low temperatures when there is already ambient air outside that could be drawn in through purpose-designed vents in the appliance to replace artificially refrigerated air.
The novel AAEC fuels combustion, gasification and pyrolysis system is deemed to have the following unique set of qualities 1) Ability to utilize raw MSW as well as many other diverse biomass and waste based fuels in particle sizes from sawdust, wood shavings, corn cobs, pellets, briquettes to small square to large round or industrial size bales, either manually or automatically fed into the combustion furnace or ...more »
